Xabi Alonso praises Jeremie Frimpong after World Cup call up

On Friday, it was announced Jeremie Frimpong will be going to the World Cup as he was called up by Louis Van Gaal to join the Dutch national team. Frimpong has yet to make a senior appearance for the national team and he has been rewarded for his form this season.

Xabi Alonso spoke on Frimpong’s inclusion: “He deserves this chance to participate in the World Cup.” The former midfielder also praised the right-back’s form this season: “He has a very big impact on our game. He is a very good player, but for me is even a special player. It is logical that Louis Van Gaal gives him the chance because he is a difference player.”

Frimpong has five goals and two assists for Bayer Leverkusen this season and has been by far die Werkself’s best player this season in a poor campaign that sees them currently sit 13th in the Bundesliga. The right back has also played a role all games bar one for Leverkusen this season, missing out on the 3-0 loss against Porto in the Champions League through suspension.

The competition for the right-back position in the Dutch squad is not as fierce as expected with Denzel Dumfries being the only one that stands in between Frimpong and a starting place in Qatar.
