Xabi Alonso favourite to succeed Gerardo Seoane at Bayer Leverkusen

After Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-0 defeat against Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Gerardo Seoane is under increasing pressure. Die Werkself have just two wins in their last 11 games across all competitions.

As reported first by ESPN, Bayer Leverkusen are considering Xabi Alonso as a potential replacement. This also coincides with information from Kicker and Sport1, although the latter states that a decision has not yet been made on Seoane’s future.

Should Seoane be dismissed after 56 games following his appointment in July 2021, then Alonso would be the favourite to succeed the 43-year-old.

This also comes after Sport1 had reported that Bayer Leverkusen had contacted Thomas Tuchel, who was sacked by Chelsea last month, but has since turned down a position at the Bundesliga club.

Alonso (40) started his coaching career as a Real Madrid youth coach in 2018 but was appointed Real Sociedad B manager in 2019, a position he held until the summer. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder coached 98 games, averaging 1.46 points per match.
