Why Cristiano Ronaldo wanted to join Borussia Dortmund

With his Manchester United future unclear, Cristiano Ronaldo wanted to join Borussia Dortmund after being offered to the Bundesliga club by his agent, Jorge Mendes.

Bild report the following three reasons as to why Ronaldo wanted to play at the Signal Iduna Park.

The main reason was Borussia Dortmund’s participation in this season’s Champions League. Ronaldo’s brand deals with Nike, Clear and Binance brings significant income and is linked to their presence in Europe’s most prestigious competition – and Manchester United only qualified for the Europa League.

Ronaldo generates enormous revenue through advertising and per the report, would have been willing to forego some of his reported €29m salary to join BVB.

Another reason is that Ronaldo is missing a Bundesliga title in his impressive trophy cabinet. The 37-year-old has won the Premier League (Manchester United), La Liga (Real Madrid) and Serie A (Juventus).

In addition to this, Ronaldo would also be playing on one of the biggest stages in world football, in front of 80,000 fans on a weekly basis at Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion.

Despite this, Borussia Dortmund made it instantly clear that they have no interest in signing Ronaldo from Manchester United this summer, despite CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke being charmed by the idea of the Portuguese forward playing for BVB this season.
