Official | Schalke sign Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg on loan

Newly-promoted Bundesliga side Schalke have tonight announced the signing of Liverpool central-defender Sepp van den Berg (20) on loan. Both clubs agreed not to disclose further details.

“We are very happy that Sepp chose us despite great competition,” said S04 sporting director Rouven Schröder.

“With him we have gained a fast central defender who is good in one-on-one situations and who is strong in the game, who will liven up the competition in the squad in the way that we planned after the departure of Malick Thiaw. We are convinced that he has the potential to close the gap that has arisen there and that he will compete.”

Speaking about his move, van den Berg told the club’s official website: “I was really happy when I heard that a traditional club like Schalke was interested in me.”

S04 moved quickly to announced the signing of the Dutch youth international following the departure of Thiaw (20), who joined Milan for a base fee of €5m.
