Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin have announced the signing of 25-year-old Croatia international Ivan Šunjić from Birmingham City on loan with an option to buy.

“I’ve watched Ivan Šunjić for a number of years. I’m delighted that we’ve now been able to bring him to Hertha BSC,” said sporting director Fredi Bobic. “He’s an aggressive ball-winning defensive midfielder and his mentality and qualities will fit perfectly with the football we want to play.”

After three years and 123 Championship games in England, Šunjić moved to the German capital where he will play under Sandro Schwarz.

“I’m really happy to get the chance to impress in a new league and I can’t wait to get started,” added Šunjić. “I’m looking forward to getting to know my new teammates and I want to settle in as quickly as possible.”

The Croatia international comes to the club with the possibility that up to seven first team players could leave this summer as they undergo a transition period, Argentine midfielder Santiago Ascacibar (25) is one of those, a player whom Šunjić will replace.
