Newcastle United move ‘doesn’t interest’ Jonathan Burkardt

Newcastle United target Jonathan Burkardt has stated that he will remain at Mainz for the coming season with two-years to run on his current deal.

“First of all, I didn’t know anything about it myself and secondly, it doesn’t interest me at all,” said Burkardt. “I will definitely stay in Mainz this season.”

Burkardt (22) enjoyed his best goalscoring season last year, scoring 14 and created four across 37 games in all competitions for Mainz under Bo Svensson.

Valued at €17m by Transfermarkt, Burkardt has scored 10 in 20 games for Germany U21s, adding to his impressive goalscoring tally for such a young forward.

Mainz have had a relatively busy transfer window so far following the departures of Moussa Niakhaté and Jeremiah St. Juste for a combined fee of almost €20m. Angelo Fulgini (Angers) and Maxin Leitsch (Bochum) arrive at the Bundesliga club for a combined €8.5m, significantly improving their squad.
