With seven wins and one draw in eight games across all competitions this season, Freiburg have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the 2026/27 campaign. Speaking exclusively to the Bundesliga, Derry Scherhant discusses his club’s impressive start to the season, as well as his own development, having since made his German national team debut.
“I don’t think we could’ve imagined it better,” he started. “It’s been a very good start for us. The team’s just working really well together. We also get on really well off the pitch. Everyone knows our play, what they need to do. I think we’re seeing that a bit. We’ll just try to build on it all.”
Swapping Berlin for Freiburg in July 2025, the 23-year-old discussed the difference between the two cities. “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t a big change,” he said.
“It was a big contrast, but I wasn’t the sort of guy in Berlin who got distracted much. I knew where my priorities were. So, it maybe wasn’t such a big change in some respects, but the whole environment is obviously different. You get used to it over time.
“I really like Freiburg and feel at home here, even if friends and family are a bit further away. They still come to visit often enough and the whole environment in the team – from physios to fitness coaches and the team behind the team – is just really special here, and that togetherness has been passed on to the team.”
Making his Germany in the recent international break, Scherhant discussed the role that Freiburg has played in his development. “We know that work morale is very important,” he explained.
“We’re told every game and in every analysis session that we need to give 100 percent, especially in our work against the ball. It’s sort of the Freiburg DNA that you need to work hard against the ball.
“Everything else comes after that. We try to implement that as best we can. I think that’s got us as a team to where we are now in the table.
“And obviously, if the team weren’t performing well – and it has to be every player at Freiburg, whether they’re called up or not – then we wouldn’t be as high up the table as we are and individuals wouldn’t be getting called up for their country. I think we all know that.”
Freiburg will look to extend their unbeaten start to the season when they host Jablonec in their opening UEFA Conference League fixture tonight, before travelling to Bayer Leverkusen on 18 October.
