Manuel Akanji doesn’t want to extend Borussia Dortmund contract

Borussia Dortmund Sporting Director Sebastian Kehl has confirmed that central-defender Manuel Akanji doesn’t want to extend his contract with the Bundesliga club, leaving his future uncertain.

“Manuel has a contract until 2023 but doesn’t want to extend it and there is nothing new. We are in close contact with him and his advisor and we are waiting to see what happens,” Kehl told WAZ.

Juventus, Manchester United and Arsenal are all interested in signing the 26-year-old defender, who would be allowed to leave BVB for a transfer fee of around €30 million.

Akanji joined Borussia Dortmund in 2018 from Basel for a fee just over €21m and has played 158 games in all competitions.

With the arrivals of Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck and with Mats Hummels still at the club, regular playing time may be hard to find for the Switzerland international.
