Lothar Matthäus compares Jamal Musiala to Lionel Messi

Speaking on Sky Germany following Bayern Munich’s 2-0 win against Schalke on Saturday evening, Lothar Matthäus reserved the highest of praise for 19-year-old Jamal Musiala.

“When you see what he’s doing here, the heel flick to Gnabry [for 1-0] and the pass to Choupo-Moting [for 2-0], it enchants us all,” said Matthäus. “He just entertains us. This is Hollywood. I want to see this player on the pitch every time. What he did is magic. This is Messi-like. It’s crazy, this man must never leave Bavaria.”

When asked how much it would take for Bayern to sell Musiala, Matthäus said: “I say quarter of a billion. He’s not for sale. This player has to stay with Bayern.”

Musiala also received praise from Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann: “He listens well and he wants to develop. He’s also improved a lot when it comes to defensive diligence.

“He played an outstanding first half of the season and will hopefully play the World Cup and the second half of the season the same way. Basically, only an injury can stop him otherwise he will continue to perform as he has in the last few weeks.”

Musiala’s appearance for Bayern Munich on Saturday was his 100th for the Rekordmeister. Already this season the 19-year-old has a goal contribution of 22 (12 goals, 10 assists) in 22 games across all competitions. In 100 games, Musiala has 27 goals and 17 assists.

With 17 caps already for Germany, Musiala has made Hansi Flick’s 26-man squad for the World Cup. Die Mannschaft start their tournament against Japan on November 23 before games against Spain and Costa Rica.
