Julian Nagelsmann: “We have to turn up the intensity.”

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of a crucial Champions League second-leg against Villarreal, Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann has confidence that his team will produce a result.

“We’ve had a few games this year and we’ve always delivered,” said Nagelsmann. “We want to deliver again tomorrow. It’s also human that after so many titles you sometimes need special pressure. It’s a well-known fact that diamonds are formed under high pressure. Hopefully it will be a brilliant performance tomorrow.”

A 1-0 defeat in Spain, Nagelsmann added: “We have to turn up the intensity of the game as a whole. Football is intense, especially when starting up. Villarreal has the quality to get out of pressing situations, especially with diagonal balls. We made a lot of mistakes in the first leg.”

Nagelsmann wants communication between his players on the pitch, something that they’ve been criticised for not doing enough of following the departures of Jerome Boateng and David Alaba.

“Everyone has to take responsibility and rather talk too much than too little,” said Nagelsmann. “There is a lot at stake, so we have to invest in a lot. Not all of us have our peak right now, but that’s normal over the course of a season.”

Nagelsmann confirms that Bayern Munich will be without Niklas Süle, Corentin Tolisso, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Bouna Sarr for their Champions League game vs Villarreal on Tuesday night.
