Julian Nagelsmann on Alphonso Davies for Lucas Hernandez: “The substitution wasn’t voluntary.”

Speaking after Bayern Munich’s elimination from the Champions League against Villarreal, Julian Nagelsmann discussed the reasoning for bringing on Alphonso Davies in place of Lucas Hernandez after 88 minutes.

“The substitution wasn’t voluntary. Lucas got injured. I considered bringing on a fast player in Alphonso [Davies] because they brought in a fast player down that side,” said Nagelsmann.

Seconds later, Samuel Chukwueze scored Villarreal’s equaliser on the night and put them through to the Champions League semi-finals on aggregate. Davies played Chukwueze onside.
