Gio Reyna returns for Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund head coach Marco Rose confirmed in his pre-match press conference that 19-year-old American midfielder Gio Reyna is available for the Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday.

“I’m happy because Gio has had two good weeks of training. Seeing him again and having his qualities again is just great and important for us,” said Rose. “We need to see how long he can cope with after this long time out.”

The American picked up a muscle injury whilst on international duty in September 2021 and has played just 221 minutes of Bundesliga football this season, featuring in three games and scoring two goals.

Head of the BVB pro department Sebastian Kehl added: “Gio has gone through a difficult period. He was out for several months with an injury that has bothered him a lot. He’s a very, very young player who also had to learn to deal with it. It took a bit of time and a lot of talks.

“We missed him. His creativity, his goal threat and his slyness to move between the lines.”
