Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken set to start against Denmark and Germany

Freiburg goalkeeper Mark Flekken is having a great season between the sticks and is now set to start for the Netherlands in friendlies against Denmark and Germany.

With nine clean sheets to his name already this campaign, the Dutchman has caught the eye of the national team coach, Louis Van Gaal, who appears to prefer the Freiburger to Tim Krul (Norwich City) and Joel Drommel (PSV Eindhoven).

Speaking earlier in the week during a KNVB press conference, Van Gaal discussed trying new formations including a three-man defence. This is perhaps why the Dutch coach has chosen Freiburg’s number one. Van Gaal said: “Flekken is excellent for playing behind a back three. He does that in Freiburg too.”

Speaking to Dutch sports news outlet 1Limburg, Flekken admitted: “I have already received the good news from the Dutch coach.” He later expressed his emotions by saying after the phone call he “trembled for an hour.”

Flekken could be up against many of his Bundesliga counterparts when Germany travel to Amsterdam on March 29th to play The Netherlands.
