Daniel Farke has no intention of giving up Yann Sommer

Borussia Mönchengladbach completed their first session of the winter training camp on Tuesday and speaking after the session, Daniel Farke discussed the future of Yann Sommer.

“We want to extend with Yann,” said Farke. “With him, we have one of the best goalkeepers in Europe with us. We have no intention of giving him up.”

Sommer (33) is entering the final six months of his current deal and has interest from both Manchester United and Inter Milan. Gladbach appear to be doing everything they can to extend his contract beyond 2023 and sporting director Roland Virkus hasn’t given up on tying him down to a new deal.

With Manuel Neuer out for the remainder of the season after breaking his leg in a skiing accident, Sommer has also been linked with Bayern Munich as they weigh up options. Sommer appears to be one of those, Bayern could also end the loan of Alexander Nübel prematurely but would need to pay the Principality side compensation – Croatia’s Dominik Livaković is also mentioned.

Borussia Mönchengladbach appear to be playing hardball over Sommer and it’s unlikely the Swiss No. 1 will leave the Bundesliga club in January – which could mean a free transfer in the summer. Sommer has played 335 games in all competitions for Die Fohlen since his €9m move from Basel in 2014.
