Dan-Axel Zagadou to leave Borussia Dortmund

Speaking to Ruhr Nachrichten, future Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has confirmed that central-defender Dan-Axel Zagadou will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

“We once again had a very open conversation with each other and came to the decision not to extend his contract,” said Kehl. “Daxo has been with us for a long time, he’s a great person and a great footballer. We wish him all the best.”

One reason for his departure is no doubt his injury record. The Frenchman underwent three knee operations and had several muscular injuries, limiting Zagadou to just 91 appearances in all competitions after five years.

Game time is also likely to be limited following the arrivals of Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck.

Zagadou will be in the squad for BVB’s final game of the season against Hertha Berlin, where he will be given a farewell.
