In this weekly feature, hosts of the Gegenpressing podcast Stefan Bienkowski and Manu Veth face off with their predictions for the forthcoming Bundesliga matchday fixtures. It’s three points for a correct score and one point for a correct result. Who will come out on top at the end of the season?
Manu’s Game of the Week: Bayern Munich vs Freiburg
My match of the week is Bayern Munich against Freiburg. Or, in other words, the second half of Bundesliga Super Sunday. And, as Stefan and I pointed out on the podcast, there is a good chance that not much will change in the top four, as I predict this game will end in a draw. That, however, does not mean that it will not be entertaining. Bayern and Freiburg had excellent spells both domestically and in Europe—both are perfect in their respective European competitions—and will look to carry over their form to the Bundesliga. As for what will happen on the pitch at the Allianz Arena: Freiburg’s style of handing over possession and quickly transiting through the middle of the park is a bad omen for Bayern, as is the potential absence of Jamal Musiala. Freiburg will try to sit deep and make this difficult, and if they stick to their tactics they could walk away with a point.
Manu’s Predictions:
- Schalke 0-2 Hoffenheim
- Eintracht Frankfurt 2-2 Bayer Leverkusen
- Wolfsburg 1-2 Borussia Mönchengladbach
- Stuttgart 2-0 Bochum
- Werder Bremen 3-0 Mainz
- RB Leipzig 2-1 Hertha Berlin
- FC Köln 2-1 Augsburg
- Union Berlin 2-2 Borussia Dortmund
- Bayern Munich 1-1 Freiburg
Stefan’s Game of the Week: Union Berlin vs Borussia Dortmund
It goes without saying that Sunday offers the most intriguing games this weekend and there’s no doubt that the earlier kick-off in Köpenick should be a fascinating match for any German football fan. Urs Fischer’s side have taken no prisoners this season in the Bundesliga and a trip to the capital should be as tough a test as Dortmund faced last weekend against Bayern Munich. Let’s see if Edin Terzic’s side have the talent and consistency to pick up a result needed to keep with arm’s reach of the Bavarian giants and the two impressive teams above them.
Stefan’s Predictions:
- Schalke 0-2 Hoffenheim
- Eintracht Frankfurt 1-2 Bayer Leverkusen
- Stuttgart 0-0 Bochum
- Werder Bremen 2-0 Mainz
- Wolfsburg 1-2 Borussia Mönchengladbach
- RB Leipzig 2-2 Hertha Berlin
- FC Köln 0-1 Augsburg
- Union Berlin 2-2 Borussia Dortmund
- Bayern Munich 2-1 Freiburg
Scores after MD9: Manu – 45, Stefan – 33.
