Borussia Dortmund’s Anthony Modeste: “It’s always been my dream to experience the Champions League.”

Anthony Modeste (34) posted on Instagram his reasoning behind leaving FC Köln for Borussia Dortmund.

“Certain circumstances in football mean that you can’t control fate,” said Modeste. “As many might think, I’m not going for the money. I’ve turned down big offers from Gulf countries. It’s always been my dream to experience the Champions League and now that opportunity has presented itself to me. I don’t think it will come again.”

The Frenchman yesterday completed a move to Borussia Dortmund for a reported €5m, earning a salary around €6m, an increase from his reported €3.5m at FC Köln. Modeste has signed a one-year deal until 2023 with BVB and will provide cover for Sébastien Haller.

Last season, Modeste helped FC Köln qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League, the first time they’ve qualified for Europe since 2017. The Frenchman’s 20 goals in 32 Bundesliga goals contributing to Köln’s seventh place finish. During two spells at FC Köln, Modeste has scored 79 goals across 156 games in all competitions.
