50/50 chance Yann Sommer will stay with Borussia Mönchengladbach beyond 2023

According to Kicker, Yann Sommer has a 50/50 chance as to whether he will stay at Borussia Mönchengladbach beyond 2023. The Swiss international was close to leaving Gladbach this summer and was heavily linked to a move to France to rejoin former boss Lucien Favre at OGC Nice.

The French club had reportedly offered €2.5m for the goalkeeper. However, just days after Gladbach had reportedly offered the 33-year-old a new three-year deal. The club captain chose to stay in the Bundesliga for one more season at least.

Speaking during an interview, Gladbach sports director Roland Virkus explained: “Yann has an offer. We also spoke well, you have to say that. There will be a decision after the World Cup.”

However, Virkus understands that the 33-year-old may want another challenge elsewhere. The sports director admitted: “You also have personal goals. Maybe you want to play for another club again. Maybe you want to win a championship somewhere again. He has to weigh all that.”

Sommer has been at Gladbach since 2014 and has made over 200 appearances for the club. Now club captain, the Swiss is a key part of the squad and has had many memorable moments in a Gladbach shirt.
