The race for Dayot Upamecano

According to Bild, Bayern Munich are leading the race to sign Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig and are pulling out all of the stops to sign the French defender.

Premier League teams Chelsea and Liverpool have both shown interest in signing the 22-year-old but Bayern Munich are ready to pay his €42.5 million release clause, despite earlier reports suggesting that the Bundesliga side have been hit financially following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić held a secret meeting with the entourage of Upamecano at Bayern’s Säbener Straße HQ last month which lasted 2.5 hours to discuss a potential transfer with those talks seemingly positive.

David Alaba is likely to leave this summer and Jerome Boateng is yet to sign a contract extension and so, Bayern Munich are prioritising signing a centre-back during the summer window.

Per the report, Chelsea would have no problem in paying the transfer fee and salary for Upamecano whilst Jürgen Klopp would prefer to signing the Frenchman to making Ozan Kabak’s move permanent.
