Mats Hummels: “Our aim of qualifying for the Champions League is in danger.”

Speaking to Sky Germany after Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 defeat at Freiburg, defender Mats Hummels admits their chances of qualifying for Champions League football is narrowing after their latest result.

“We have to accept criticism for the result,” said Hummels. “But I will always assess what happens on the pitch. We lost a lot of 50/50 challenges. We shouldn’t pretend that all the opponents have been better than us recently.

“Of course our aim of qualifying for the Champions League is in danger.. We know that is the minimum we must achieve.”

21-year-old winger Jeong Woo-yeong gave Freiburg the lead after Emre Can and Erling Braut Haaland came close in the first-half before Jonathan Schmid doubled Freiburg’s lead two minutes later. Youssoufa Moukoko pulled one back for Borussia Dortmund 15 minutes from time.

Interim Edin Terzić head coach has won just one in his last five Bundesliga game which sees Borussia Dortmund down in seventh and three points off a Champions League spot.
