Speaking ahead of Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash against Serie A side Lazio on Tuesday evening, head coach Hansi Flick stated his team must play better than they have been of late.
“I’m not someone who looks for excuses,” said Flick. “The first halves against Eintracht Frankfurt and Bielefeld were not good enough. Now we have to be in top form in the Champions League. These are special games for us and I expect the team to be motivated.”
“I want my team to be wide awake from the start, they have shown they can do that many times. I have absolute confidence that they will show it against Lazio tomorrow. We have to play the way we imagine from the start.”
Flick confirmed that defender Niklas Süle is a doubt which could see a return to right-back for Joshua Kimmich, but Leon Goretzka will return to the starting eleven.
“Leon will start tomorrow,” added Flick. “Coming back after such an illness shouldn’t be taken lightly. We hope that he will perform as he did against Frankfurt. He’s important for our game.”
