Toni Schumacher on Alexander Nübel: “I’m surprised that he is going to Bayern & will be sitting on the bench for the next three years.”

Former FC Köln and Germany goalkeeper Harald ‘Toni’ Schumacher has criticised Alexander Nübel’s transfer to Bayern Munich, stating that he can only progress if you plays regularly.

“I’m a little surprised that Nübel is going to Bayern and will be sitting on the bench for the next three, if not, four years,” Schumacher told Kicker.

“I can only recommend to young goalkeepers again and again that you only get better when you play and not if you’re sitting on the bench somewhere. Even if you sit on the bench behind the best goalkeeper in the world, you will only get better if you collect game practise yourself.”

Schumacher played 464 games for Köln in the Bundesliga during 1972 and 1987 and represented Germany on 76 occasions.
