Lucas Hernández on joining Bayern Munich: “I moved to a big club that put great emphasis on me.”

Speaking to reporters ahead of Bayern Munich vs Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, 24-year-old defender Lucas Hernández discussed his transfer from the Spanish club, his admiration of Diego Simeone and his goals at Bayern.

“This season has started well for me, I’m trying to get involved and want to prove what I can do. That’s the attitude I always have,” said Lucas.

The 24-year-old discussed his decision to join Bayern Munich from Atlético Madrid last summer for €80 million: “I wanted to join this club. I moved to a big club that put great emphasis on me. Of course, I have a great connection with Atlético, the club that gave me everything. I don’t regret the move, I’m at a big club.”

Bayern Munich welcome Atlético Madrid to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday, their first fixture in the 2020/21 Champions League: “It’s always difficult to play against Atlético,” added Lucas.

“You can’t compare the teams from when I was there. New players have arrived and they play a different system but they are still defensively stable and are threatening up front. We have to be very focused.

“We want to win every game. The absence of Diego Costa weighs heavily but Atlético have a lot of good players. It doesn’t matter who plays, they’ll have good quality.”

The Frenchman played 110 games under Diego Simeone during his time at Atlético, a coach that Lucas admires greatly: “I’m very grateful to him, he has done a lot for me. He’s one of the best coaches in the world. I left because I wanted to achieve new goals and get to know a new culture.”

Lucas Hernández joined Bayern Munich from Atlético Madrid as a World Cup winner for a club record €80 million in 2019 but injuries has hampered the Frenchman’s career in Germany. The 24-year-old played just nine games under Niko Kovac and 21 under head coach Hansi Flick but after a return to full fitness, the Frenchman is starting to prove himself at the Bundesliga and European champions.
