Javi Martínez on Bayern Munich future: “I would like to try something new.”

Speaking to reporters in today’s presser, Bayern Munich midfielder Javi Martínez commented on his future, stating that he would like to try a new challenge.

“I’ve already said this is not the time to talk about June 2021,” said Martínez. “I’ve had some great years here, let’s see what happens. I would like to try something new before the end of my career. I have no preferences.”

The 32-year-old has a contract with Bayern Munich until June 2021 and would be free to speak to other clubs in January when the Spaniard has just six months remaining on his contract.

Martínez came close to returning to former side Athletic Club during the final week of the transfer window but the Spanish side were unable to find an agreement with Bayern Munich. Instead, the Bundesliga champions decided to loan Michaël Cuisance to Marseille which would have left Bayern short in midfield.

It’s extremely unlikely that Martínez will sign a contract extension at Bayern.
