Speaking at Borussia Dortmund’s pre-match press conference, Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc and head coach Lucien Favre paid tribute to Diego Maradona, who died at the age of 60 on Wednesday.
“I played against him in Barcelona once,” said Zorc. “I didn’t win many duels against him. In my day, he was definitely the best player in the world.”
Head coach Favre added: “I have great memories of Maradona. His games, his goals and his qualities. I personally played against him once in a friendly match. He was a fantastic player. Unfortunately at 60, he died too young.”
Jadon Sancho posted on his Instagram: “Never got to meet Diego but always watch him as a kid on YouTube and he definitely inspired me.”
The Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) have confirmed that a minute of silence will be held before every Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga game in Germany this weekend to pay their respects to Maradona.
