Leverkusen lose Javier Hernandez and Lars Bender to injury

Bad news for Bayer Leverkusen comes just days before the start of the Bundesliga season, as two of their top players will miss the season-opener against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez, top scorer last year with 17 league goals, broke his hand falling down stairs and isn’t expected back until Matchday 3.

Club captain Lars Bender hurt his ankle in the Olympic Final in Rio last Saturday against Brazil, confirmed by an MRI this morning with the team doctor. A time frame for his return was not given, but he will be out at least two weeks.

The club announced this news on their official website.
