Said El Mala has agreed to stay at Cologne by signing a contract that lasts until 2031. The 19-year-old talented winger will also wear the number 10 shirt that was last worn by World Cup-winning legend Lukas Podolski.
El Mala has been strongly linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund this summer, with other clubs across Europe interested in his signature. However, repeated bids from several clubs were not accepted by Cologne, and now it seems like the German talent will be staying at the Billy Goats for at least another season.
Addressing fans following the announcement, El Mala said: “ It was a huge honor to play for you in the number 13. But I had to make a decision. Your number 13 leaves, but your new number 10 stays.”
According to Sky Germany, the new contract doesn’t have an exit clause, but the player’s salary has been raised.
Beyond club level, El Mala is expected to lead the attack of the German national team, and reports suggest that Jürgen Klopp is a big admirer of the player.
