Union Berlin have taken another significant step toward signing Swiss international Michel Aebischer from Pisa. Sky Germany reports that the 29-year-old midfielder has reached a complete verbal agreement with the Köpenick-based club. Negotiations between Union and Pisa are also said to be at an advanced stage. Sport Bild likewise reports that Aebischer is determined to move to the German capital and has rejected alternative options in both the Bundesliga and Italy.
A transfer fee of approximately €3-4m has recently been discussed. Get German Football News reported last week that Union had submitted an opening €3m offer for Aebischer. At that stage, Pisa and Union remained some distance apart despite the player already favouring a move to Köpenick. Aebischer would arrive as an important reinforcement for a midfield that remains one of Union’s most obvious areas of need.
GGFN’s recent 2026/27 Union Berlin tactical preview highlighted the uncertainty surrounding Mauro Lustrinelli’s midfield structure throughout pre-season. Union experimented with several shapes before appearing to settle on a double pivot, while questions surrounding Rani Khedira’s future added further uncertainty.
Aebischer would offer a different profile. The 44-times-capped Switzerland international can operate as a conventional central midfielder or in more advanced areas, providing greater technical quality and creativity in possession. The former Young Boys and Bologna midfielder only became a permanent Pisa player this summer after an appearance-based obligation to buy was triggered during last season.
Pisa’s relegation to Serie B has nevertheless opened the door to an immediate departure. Union appear increasingly close to securing one of their primary midfield targets.
