Though he likely will still be departing his Bundesliga club this summer, Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has still left the door open just a smidgen for transfer candidate Sacha Boey. The 25-year-old remains one of the players Bayern hope to move before the transfer window closes. Kompany recently backed the club’s clear transfer stance on Boey and João Palhinha, acknowledging that regular playing time could prove difficult should they remain in Munich.
Boey nevertheless started Friday’s 2-1 friendly victory over Aston Villa in Hong Kong as Bayern completed their Asia tour. Boey again performed well before being substituted following a heavy knock. Kompany subsequently confirmed that Boey’s transfer situation remains unchanged, but offered extensive praise for how the defender has handled it.
“Sacha’s situation has been clearly communicated by the club,” Kompany said. “We are looking for a solution. But ultimately, one of the things that impressed me was how he trained and played. He gives everything. It was a positive performance from him.”
Could Bayern’s personnel situation lead to Sacha Boey staying after all?
There exists precedent for Boey forcing his way back into consideration. The former Galatasaray defender was also deemed expendable before injuries elsewhere in Bayern’s defence increased his importance. Boey has again received meaningful pre-season minutes and appears to have impressed Kompany with both his performances and professionalism. Bayern may still prefer a transfer, but sufficient defensive depth remains necessary across a long campaign.
