After fielding Marc-André ter Stegen against the Netherlands and Alexander Nübel against Greece, Germany head coach Jürgen Klopp has revealed that Jonas Urbig will play against Serbia on Thursday night. This will be the first time Urbig will play for the senior team, having featured for the youth sides for years.
On his upcoming Germany debut at the Allianz Arena, Urbig said: “It’s very special. It’s a moment you’ve worked towards your whole life. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to walk out onto the pitch in my stadium tomorrow. I will do everything I can to ensure that we, as a team, get our first win under Jürgen Klopp.”
Urbig also noted that he found out about the team selection on Wednesday in training and was delighted with the news.
Urbig has so far made 23 league appearances for Bayern Munich and has indicated that he is not concerned about people who say he can’t be number 1 at the national team while being number 2 at club level. “ My focus is on reaching my limit every day and pushing beyond it. Everything else will fall into place over time,” he stated.
