Hamburg have delivered an emphatic vote of confidence in head coach Merlin Polzin despite opening the 2026/27 Bundesliga campaign with three consecutive defeats. German footballing media sources report that the new agreements for Polzin and his assistant coaches remain valid only so long as HSV retain their Bundesliga status.
The timing nevertheless ensures that the announcement attracts considerable attention. Polzin’s side remain without a point or goal after three league fixtures and enter Saturday’s home encounter against Cologne carrying a 0-12 goal difference. HSV have consequently arrived at precisely the same points total as Borussia Mönchengladbach through three matchdays. The two clubs have responded to their respective crises in completely different ways.

Hamburg reward Polzin for broader body of work
Viewed exclusively through the prism of the opening three fixtures, the decision would appear extraordinary. Polzin’s HSV opened the season with a 2-0 defeat away at Borussia Dortmund before suffering consecutive 5-0 losses against Mainz and RB Leipzig. The Mainz result prompted Polzin to accept responsibility for several personnel decisions while describing the defeat as a “dose of reality”.
One week later, the Hamburg trainer attempted to distinguish the Leipzig performance from the previous collapse, insisting that his team had at least shown signs of progress before conceding three times in five second-half minutes. The club’s assessment evidently extends much further back, deeming Polzin worthy of continued backing after he helped the Hanseatic city-state club attain promotion back to the Bundesliga and avoid relegation last season.
Polzin survived difficult first Bundesliga season
The promotion represented only the first half of Polzin’s case for continued employment. As examined in GGFN’s 2025/26 Hamburger SV tactical preview, HSV entered their first top-flight campaign with an incomplete, imbalanced squad and considerable questions surrounding whether their young coach possessed enough experience to negotiate a Bundesliga relegation battle.
Polzin eventually answered those questions. The 2025/26 Bundesliga campaign produced memorable victories that reinforced the connection between Polzin, his players and the Volksparkstadion crowd. The end result mattered most. Hamburg finished 13th on 38 points and comfortably secured another season of Bundesliga football.
Second-season warning signs were already evident
The present crisis has not emerged completely without warning. GGFN’s 2026/27 Hamburger SV tactical preview stressed that last season’s survival did not guarantee another comfortable campaign. HSV entered competitive play with an incomplete and injury-hit squad, while several important pieces from the previous season were no longer available.
Polzin has consequently been forced to oversee another significant reconstruction. The result thus far has been disastrous. Hamburg have failed to score in all three league matches and followed a manageable opening-day loss with two historically heavy defeats. Polzin’s long HSV history nevertheless appears to carry considerably more weight with the club’s new sporting leadership than three dreadful results.
Hamburg and Gladbach choose opposite responses
The juxtaposition with Gladbach could scarcely be sharper. Both clubs entered the season after difficult 2025/26 campaigns in which their young head coaches ultimately delivered Bundesliga survival. Both retained those coaches while undertaking significant summer squad work. Both then lost their opening three Bundesliga fixtures.
Through Matchday 3, Hamburg have conceded 12 goals. Gladbach also conceded 12. Neither club has earned a point. Borussia sporting director Rouven Schröder nevertheless decided that the 5-0 defeat against Freiburg required an immediate coaching change. HSV Board Member for Sport Kathleen Krüger has reached precisely the opposite conclusion.
Statements on Merlin Polzin’s contract extension
“Our fundamental commitment was communicated clearly at an early stage and repeatedly again recently,” Krüger noted in a club statement. “We will go into the future together while still remaining aware of the current sporting situation. Trust does not mean that results become secondary, but rather is based on critical examination. That’s why we are extending the contracts with complete conviction. They impress us with their expertise, meticulousness, hard work and passion every single day.”
Sporting director Claus Costa also offered a strong endorsement of Polzin and his staff.
“Our coaching team impresses me both professionally and personally,” Costa said. “Throughout our journey together, we have always dealt with one another openly, critically and honestly and, through that, have overcome demanding challenges together. I’ve had insight into Merlin’s daily work for years and have been able to witness how he has continuously developed as a leader. I particularly value his eye for the team and his unconditional desire to keep developing together with those around him.”
Polzin described the extension as both an endorsement and an obligation.
“Our shared commitment is a sign of trust,” the HSV head coach himself said. “At the same time, I interpret it as a great responsibility and as our mandate to make the club better. Everyone knows how much this city, this club and this stadium mean to me. That makes me all the happier to continue having my entire coaching team and staff alongside me and to experience such incredible support from the club offices, the fans and so many other people around HSV.”
