Borussia Dortmund announce UEFA Champions League squad as experienced player misses out

Borussia Dortmund has submitted the final list of players for the UEFA Champions League, which is set to kick off next week. The big surprise in the announcement was the absence of 32-year-old veteran Emre Can.

The German international suffered an ACL tear last spring and has been in rehabilitation training. It was believed that Can would be able to return for the first half of the season. However, he wasn’t able to make the Champions League squad.

New signing from Arsenal, Ethan Nwaneri, was included in the list after his deadline-day move. Centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck, who returned to training a few days ago, is also on the list of players expected to play in Europe’s premium competition for the Black and Yellows.

Dortmund will kick off their Champions League campaign at home to Villarreal on Tuesday. The two sides also met in last season’s competition, in which Niko Kovac’s side managed to come out 4-0 winners.
