Hamburg have officially confirmed the signing of Leeds United centre-back Sebastiaan Bornauw on loan for the 2026/27 campaign. Multiple reports suggest that HSV have secured a purchase option worth approximately €4.5m. The move brings Bornauw back to the Bundesliga only one year after his €6m transfer from Wolfsburg to Leeds. The 27-year-old struggled to establish himself under Daniel Farke, making 12 Premier League appearances and 17 competitive outings overall.
Bornauw’s move had already been taking shape over recent days. Get German Football News reported that Hamburg were working on a deal for the Belgian defender. HSV view Bornauw as the experienced defensive leader required following the end of Luka Vušković’s loan. The former Köln and Wolfsburg defender brings 140 Bundesliga appearances and considerable aerial and physical strength.
His return to Germany also forms part of another Bundesliga transfer domino. Bornauw’s departure from Elland Road clears space for Leeds to complete the signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi. GGFN recently reported that Leeds and Gladbach had reached an agreement for the Swiss international.
At Hamburg, Bornauw is expected to assume significant responsibility immediately. HSV sporting officials have repeatedly emphasized both his experience and ability to organise a defensive line following Vušković’s departure.
Statements on Sebastiaan Bornauw’s Hamburg move
“Sebastiaan knows the Bundesliga from his previous clubs and brings a special work ethic,” HSV sporting executive Kathleen Krüger said. “With his personality, he is a great asset to any locker room and fits perfectly into our team structure. He is expected to take on a leading role within the team and make his teammates even better through his leadership abilities.”
“Sebastiaan fits our requirements extremely well,” sporting director Claus Costa added. “He brings the physical presence, strength in duels, and aerial qualities we want for our defense. He also possesses a mature and consistent style of play. Sebastiaan is a strong leader who assumes responsibility on and off the pitch and can organize our defensive line.”
“I was convinced from the first moment during my talks with HSV because I could feel the confidence those responsible had in me,” Bornauw said. “I’m really happy to be here. I like the emotions surrounding a traditional club like HSV. That gives me a lot of energy as a player. The fans can expect me to always give everything for my team.”
