FC Augsburg have completed a substantial deadline-day reshaping of Manuel Baum’s squad, adding Manchester City defender Juma Bah and Bayern Munich attacker Arijon Ibrahimovic on loan while allowing striker Thomas Kastanaras to leave for Würzburger Kickers. Both incoming loan deals contain purchase options.
Bah arrives from Manchester City for the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign with Augsburg holding an option reportedly worth €21.5m. Ibrahimovic joins from Bayern on a season-long loan with a €500,000 loan fee attached. FCA can purchase Ibrahimovic permanently for €8m next summer.
Augsburg have thus secured potential permanent pathways worth a combined €29.5m for two 20-year-olds while committing very little initially. Kastanaras, meanwhile, departs only seven months after his surprise arrival from Stuttgart.

Juma Bah replaces lost Augsburg defensive depth
Bah’s arrival solves the most obvious late problem created by Keven Schlotterbeck’s departure. GGFN reported over the weekend that Augsburg were working to acquire the Manchester City prospect after suddenly finding themselves in need of another central defender. The deal has now been completed. Bah brings considerably more senior experience than his age might suggest.
The Sierra Leone international began his European career with Real Valladolid and made 12 La Liga appearances before Manchester City acquired him for a reported €6m in January 2025. City immediately sent him to Lens, where he collected ten Ligue 1 appearances. Another loan followed at Nice last season, during which Bah made 26 league appearances.
He has yet to represent Manchester City competitively.
The club clearly view the youngster as possessing the physical profile required to replace some of what was lost when alternate captain Keven Schlotterbeck moved to Southampton. Bah’s arrival also adds another intriguing element to an Augsburg central defense already containing captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, Chrislain Matsima, Calvin Brackelmann and emerging academy prospect Noahkai Banks.
The latter featured prominently throughout preseason and appeared capable of assuming a larger role during the coming campaign. Bah now adds another young challenger to that hierarchy.
Augsburg capitalize on Ibrahimovic’s rapidly shifting Bayern situation
The Ibrahimovic deal developed under very different circumstances. Bayern initially appeared determined to integrate their academy product into Vincent Kompany’s first-team squad following a productive loan season with Heidenheim. The 20-year-old made 34 competitive appearances there, contributing two goals and five assists. He subsequently impressed again during Bayern’s preseason.
GGFN covered the sudden change in Ibrahimovic’s outlook last week, after Max Eberl acknowledged that regular competitive minutes in Munich might prove more difficult to obtain than initially anticipated. Werder Bremen and Atalanta also explored the possibility of a move. Augsburg ultimately won the race.
The deal represents a particularly interesting piece of business because FCA have secured an €8m purchase option without Bayern retaining a reported buyback clause. Should Augsburg exercise the option next summer, Ibrahimovic would become one of the most expensive players in club history.
His current estimated market value already stands at approximately €10m.
He also joins Germany U21 teammates Mert Kömür and Anton Kade in one of the Bundesliga’s increasingly interesting collections of young attacking talent.
Thomas Kastanaras exits seven months after surprise arrival
One Augsburg attacker simultaneously moves in the opposite direction. Kastanaras has joined newly promoted 3. Liga side Würzburger Kickers after only a brief spell with FCA. His Augsburg chapter always possessed an unusual quality.
Get German Football News covered Kastanaras’ surprise move from Stuttgart in February, noting at the time that the striker had spent much of the season recovering from knee surgery and appeared unlikely to immediately challenge Augsburg’s established senior forwards.
That assessment proved accurate. The Stuttgart academy product primarily collected minutes with Augsburg’s reserve side rather than establishing himself in Baum’s Bundesliga plans. Kastanaras nevertheless arrives in Würzburg with meaningful third-tier experience.
The 23-year-old has made 49 3. Liga appearances and scored ten goals, while his previous loan with Ulm included promotion during the 2023/24 campaign.
For Augsburg, the departure also helps clarify an attacking group that had become increasingly crowded.
Michael Gregoritsch and Rodrigo Ribeiro remain options through the middle, Uchenna Ogundu continues his own development and Ibrahimovic now adds another flexible attacking piece capable of working around the central striker.
Augsburg deadline business changes complexion of squad
Augsburg entered the final days of the window having spent most of the summer prioritizing stability. That changed quickly. Schlotterbeck’s departure created the need for another center-back. Bayern’s willingness to reconsider Ibrahimovic’s future created an attacking market opportunity.
Bah and Ibrahimovic fit the wider Augsburg recruitment strategy particularly well. Both are only 20. Both already possess significant senior experience. Both arrive on structures that limit Augsburg’s immediate risk while giving the club control over a permanent transfer next summer.
Deadline day has therefore left Baum with a deeper and more flexible squad than the one Augsburg carried through preseason.

“After Keven Schlotterbeck’s transfer, it was important for us to specifically add quality in central defense,” Augsburg sporting director Benni Weber noted in a club statement. “With Juma, we have signed a talented player whose size, physicality and attributes suit us very well.”
“I am very happy to be in Augsburg,” Bah himself said. “FCA is a club where young players can develop very well. There are many current examples of that. That is why this move represents the right next step for me. Being able to play in a strong league like the Bundesliga also means a great deal to me.”
Statements on Arijon Ibrahimovic’s Augsburg move
“We are very pleased that Arijon has chosen FCA,” Weber said. “He is a young player who has already demonstrated his qualities in the Bundesliga and can be used in several attacking positions. His physicality and absolute determination in particular suit us very well and fit the way we want to play football at FCA. We are convinced that he can help our team immediately.”
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund explained why the German champions sanctioned another loan.
“We sat down with Arijon and agreed that another loan season would be best for his development,” Freund said. “He is a young player with excellent attributes and needs regular playing time at this stage. He will get that at FC Augsburg, and we will continue to follow him closely along the way.”
Ibrahimovic himself emphasized the same objective.
“I want to continue developing and collect plenty of playing time,” the 20-year-old said.
Statements on Thomas Kastanaras’ Würzburg move
Würzburger Kickers head coach Michael Schiele believes Kastanaras arrives with an unusually broad range of experience for a 23-year-old striker.
“Thomas is a very well-trained striker who knows the 3. Liga and has already demonstrated that he can score goals there,” Schiele said. “He brings good physicality, works hard for the team and is very present inside the penalty area. What is particularly valuable is that, despite being only 23, he has already experienced many different situations – including winning promotion with Ulm.”
