Following his retirement from professional football last month, former Bayern Munich star Jerome Boateng was meant to be welcomed back to the Säbener Straße to audit the clubs coaching and licensing programs. Following protests from supporters of the German record champions, however, the 37-year-old will have to find someplace else to begin contemplating his post-playing career.
The youngest of the famed three Boateng brothers of Berlin’s Charlottenburg district served Bayern faithfully for over a decade, twice winning the Champions League with the FCB. The 2014 World Cup Winner’s checkered history with domestic violence has nevertheless proven too much for the Bayern supporters.
It is important to note that, in some instances involving allegations leveled at Boateng (such as his ex-girlfriend’s famous suicide in 2022), charges were ultimately never leveled due to lack of evidence. Boateng has also denied all allegations against him.
Boateng – after several appeals – was still ultimately found guilty of assault by a Munich court in 2024 in a case initially opened in 2021. The incident in question initially occurred in 2018.
Upon learning that Boateng would be returning to the Säbener Straße, protests immediately began to emerge in the FanKurve during last Saturday evening’s Bundesliga fixture against Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena.
One week later, both Bayern and Boateng issued statements confirming the collaboration had been cancelled. As of this filing, Boateng’s former Hamburger SV and Manchester City teammate Vincent Kompany (a factor in Bayern welcoming Boateng back) did not make an official statement on the matter.
“In a constructive exchange between FC Bayern and Jerome Boateng this week, it was decided that Jerome Boateng will not be interning at Bayern,” the FCB club statement read. “Jerome feels very connected to FC Bayern and does not want FC Bayern to be harmed by the current controversial discussion surrounding him.”
“Due to the recent discussions about me, I’ve opted to focus on other things,” Boateng noted in his own statement. “I thank the club and Vincent Kompany for placing trust in me. I sincerely hope that you [the team] achieve your big goals at the end of the season. Your focus should be solely on the pitch and on the goal of continuing this impressive series of 13 consecutive wins.”
