Jérôme Boateng’s first statement since Bayern Munich rejection

As previously reported, Bayern Munich decided against re-signing Jérôme Boateng earlier last week for defensive reinforcement despite a multitude of injuries affecting Thomas Tuchel’s backline. This is an issue that has become even more prominent with Dayot Upamecano recently being ruled out of the French squad for their upcoming international fixtures.

Nevertheless, It has been understood that the major factor in Bayern’s decision to not offer Boateng a contract was due to the significant fan backlash that they were receiving. However, according to Bild, this has left the former Bayern defender frustrated as he had proven his ability and fitness in training.

Boateng has since taken to Instagram to comment about the situation: “Thanks to FC Bayern for allowing me to prove myself at Säbener Straße and especially to Thomas Tuchel and his coaching staff for supporting me in having me in the team. It was nice to see so many familiar faces and friends again. I wish the team all the best for the season.”

His positive relationship with Tuchel is something that stretches back to the head coach’s time at PSG, where he tried to sign Boateng in 2018. Nevertheless, while the two may enjoy a good relationship, due to off-field issues a commitment is not possible as Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund explained:

“Jérôme was of course a bit disappointed. He would have liked to do it, he was fit and presented himself well. The conversations were always very correct and we had a good conversation at the end in which everything went fairly and he thanked us for the opportunity to train with us.”
