Wolfsburg yet to give up hope on signing Liverpool’s Sepp van den Berg

kicker reports that Wolfsburg are continuing to look for defensive reinforcements and have not given up on signing Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg.

Wolfsburg are still looking to sell players who have contracts that expire next summer with Maxence Lacroix, Aster Vranckx and Ridle Baku all candidates to leave. The player that looks most likely to leave is Lacroix, so the Wolves need to find a replacement for the French defender.

This is where van den Berg comes in. Despite featuring prominently in the pre-season for Liverpool, van den Berg does not want to sit on the bench and wants to stay in the Bundesliga.

Wolfburg faces competition from Mainz, where van den Berg spent last season on loan while Stuttgart and Hoffenheim have also been linked to the Dutch defender. However, Mainz can only afford another loan for the 22-year-old, while Wolfsburg can afford to permanently sign him. A sentiment that sporting director Christian Heidel recently stated

“We would like him to stay, and Sepp would also really like to do it. But we also respect that Liverpool have not decided about it yet. We will not buy a player for over £20 million, which is what Liverpool want. Our club cannot do that.”

The Autostadt side have already completed three signings this summer with Bence Dardai, Marius Müller and Mohamed Amoura all joining the club as Wolfsburg looks to improve on a dismal campaign last season.
