Several notable players could be cut from contention in Germany’s Euro 2024 squad

Sport Bild (via @iMiaSanMia) reports that several previously key players in the German national team could be cut from contention ahead of Euro 2024.

Mats Hummels, Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry, Nico Schlotterbeck, Niklas Süle and Emre Can are all at risk of losing their places in Germany’s squad.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann is expected to make significant changes to the team, this could potentially mean new players will get their opportunity.

However, when it comes to leadership in the squad, Nagelsmann is going to stick with tried and tested players. The leadership group will be a quartet of Manuel Neuer, Ilkay Gündogan, Antonio Rüdiger and Toni Kroos.

Upon their returns, Neuer and Kroos are expected to regain their places in the starting 11. The return of Neuer means Marc-André ter Stegen will likely miss out on finally being Germany’s number one for a tournament. Whilst the return of Kroos means the aforementioned Goretzka will likely lose his place, whilst Pascal Groß or Robert Andrich will become Kroos’ new midfield partner.

Gündogan will stay on as captain despite the return of Neuer and will be given a more attacking role. While Rüdiger is the leader of the backline.
