Mats Hummels: “There is no reason for us not to believe that we can also win the final.”

Speaking after Borussia Dortmund secured passage to the Champions League final with a 1-0 win against PSG, man of the match Mats Hummels gave his thoughts on the win.

Now with the prospect of facing either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the final, Hummels said: We will – no matter against whom – we will meet a very strong opponent. It will also be a fight with the atmosphere, with the meaning of the game. But we have already done well today. Since the second game in the group stage, we believe that we can survive in the Champions League. There is no reason at all for us not to believe that we can also win the final.

Hummels also gave his thoughts on the corner which he converted to give Dortmund the lead: “As he defended me at the corner before, I knew that I could somehow get the room. It worked wonderfully, Jule served the ball perfectly on my head.”

The 35-year-old put in a monstrous performance at centre-back alongside Nico Schlotterbeck to help shut out Dortmund in the second leg. Hummels also contributed with the goal that won Dortmund the game. The defender’s performance won him the man of the match.

Hummels’ contract at Dortmund expires in the summer and a win in the final could be the perfect sign-off for his career as he has yet to win Europe’s premier competition having lost in the final in 2013 to Bayern Munich alongside Marco Reus.
