Marco Reus edges towards the exit door at Borussia Dortmund

Bild reports that a contract extension for Marco Reus at Borussia Dortmund is becoming increasingly unlikely as his current deal expires in the summer.

One of the main reasons cited for this is Reus’ lack of versatility. With his age, Reus can now only play as a ‘number 10’ due to the pace of the game being too high for the 34-year-old on the wing. There is also a belief that he may block the likes of Julian Brandt as well as youth player Kjell Wätjen in their development.

This season, Reus has spent more time on the bench but is still a key player for Dortmund, in 24 games he has scored six and assisted twice.

While for Reus’ teammate Mats Hummels, his future is up to him. Due to the 35-year-old’s performances in the team this season, Hummels can decide on if he wishes to extend his contract at Dortmund or retire at the end of the season. If the 35-year-old decides to extend his contract another year then Dortmund will give the greenlight immediately.
