Liverpool and Tottenham set to go head-to-head for the signing of Ko Itakura

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool and Tottenham are set to go head-to-head for the signing of Borussia Mönchengladbach centre-back Ko Itakura.

It is understood that Liverpool have been monitoring the development of the Japanese international and have been impressed by his performances for Die Fohlen. As for Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou is said to be a long-term admirer of the Gladbach defender, with the former Celtic head coach once wanting to lure Itakura to Celtic Park.

Nevertheless, there are a number of other top clubs looking to sign the 26-year-old. However, as of now, Liverpool and Tottenham look the most likely to land his signature.

Regardless, whether a deal will be struck this winter is unknown. This is because, as per the report, Itakura is believed to have a release clause in his contract with the Foals, but it is not valid in January.

Therefore, despite several injuries to the backlines of Liverpool and Tottenham, both sides may look elsewhere if they choose not to negotiate with Gladbach. As well as this, Itakura has been sidelined with a recent ankle injury himself, and while he may be part of the Japan squad for the Asian games, it has not yet been confirmed whether he is back to full fitness.
