Julian Schuster one of the main candidates to replace Christian Streich at Freiburg

Sky Germany reports that former Freiburg player Julian Schuster is one of the main candidates to replace Christian Streich as head coach

Schuster played 219 times for Freiburg in 10 years at the club even becoming captain. This would be his first role as a head coach as he is currently ‘Coordinator of Talent Management’ at the Black Forest side.

There have also been talks of Freiburg’s under-23 coach Thomas Stamm taking over from Streich but he is unlikely to be the direct successor for Streich. Stamm’s Freiburg side are currently bottom of the 3.Liga had a big drop-off compared to last season where they finished second behind eventual winners Elversberg. Several current Freiburg players have come through the second team with Noah Atubolu and Jordy Makengo all featuring for the senior side this season.

Bild have also reported that there are several external options with former Union Berlin boss Urs Fischer candidates, whilst Paderborn’s Lukas Kwasniok and St Pauli’s Fabian Hürzeler also have options, however, the latter recently extended his contract at the Hamburg side.
