Ian Maatsen wins Bundesliga Rookie of the Month

Just one month into his spell at Borussia Dortmund, Ian Maatsen (21) has won the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month Award for January.

Just 24 hours after joining on a six-month loan from Chelsea, the Dutchman was awarded his Bundesliga debut.

Maatsen started all three Bundesliga games for Borussia Dortmund in January and in just his second game, the 21-year-old assisted for compatriot Donyell Malen in BVB’s 4-0 win against FC Köln.

Deputising for Ramy Bensebaini and Julian Ryerson, Maatsen has since made the left-back spot his own. There’s an aurora of Raphaël Guerreiro about him in terms of his output in the final third. Not only that, Maatsen has looked solid defensively and his performances were key in Dortmund conceding just one goal in January.

Maatsen was in esteemed company for Bundesliga Rookie of the Month

Maximilian Beier (Hoffenheim) and Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig) have also been nominated this month. Simons was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Month for December, while Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface won the award for August, September, October and November.
