Bayern Munich question Hansi Flick’s ability

Heading into matchday 22, Bayern Munich were in a mini-crisis after losing to league leaders Bayer Leverkusen and then Lazio in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie. However, after Sunday afternoon’s dismal display away to VfL Bochum, Der Rekordmeister are now in a full-blown crisis.

Eight points now separate them from Die Werkself, and a first season without silverware in 13 years appears to be on the horizon. Regardless, Thomas Tuchel’s job as head coach seems to be safe for now.

As reported by The Athletic, Bayern are willing to see out the rest of the season with Tuchel in charge before they assess their options. It is understood that Hansi Flick has been identified as a possible candidate, but there are question marks over his ability to lead the club due to his poor record with the German National Team.

From 2020 to the start of 2021, Flick won an astonishing six titles with Bayern, overseeing one of the most dominant periods in the club’s history. However, having failed to guide Germany past the round of 16 stage at EURO 2020 before being kicked out at the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, Flick’s stock has drastically diminished in the eyes of those in Bavaria.

Therefore, Bayern are looking to use the time between now and the summer to identify a big name who could come in and overhaul the squad ahead of next season. Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso would undoubtedly be the number one candidate, but no decision will be made until the season is finished.
