Bayer Leverkusen are not looking to sign a Victor Boniface replacement

Bayer Leverkusen have been an unstoppable force this season; unbeaten in the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Europa League, Die Werkself are on course to claim an unprecedented treble. However, if they are to do so, they will have to navigate their way through a tricky period that approaches.

With key players on international duty, Xabi Alonso will have to rely on his whole squad if they are to continue their fine form through January and February. Nevertheless, what could prove to be more damaging for Leverkusen is the injury sustained to Victor Boniface, as reported earlier this week.

The Nigerian international is set to be ruled out until April after suffering an abductor injury in preparation for the African Cup of Nations. With 16 goals and eight assists in 23 appearances for the Werkself during this season, his absence will undoubtedly be felt.

Regardless, Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, confirmed to Kicker that the club are “not necessarily looking for a nine” this winter. With Patrik Schick back in the squad after being troubled with injuries for the best part of two years, there is belief that the Czech international can fill the void until Boniface’s return.

With six goals and one assist in nine fleeting appearances this season, the 27-year-old is currently averaging a goal contribution every 41 minutes. Nonetheless, while his form has been remarkable, there is always a risk due to his injury record, and Rolfes would state that there is always the chance of a new arrival:

“It is clear that we are monitoring the situation even more closely – including the course of the next few weeks, what is happening here and at the Africa Cup – and that we are checking out options.”
