The candidates to replace Steffen Baumgart at 1.FC Köln

The Express reports that four potential candidates could replace now departed 1.FC Köln manager Steffen Baumgart.

Thomas Reis (ex-Schalke), Heiko Herrlich, Enrico Maaßen (both ex-Augsburg), André Breitenreiter (ex-Hoffenheim), Ralph Hasenhüttl (ex-Southampton), Bo Svensson (ex-Mainz) and Stefan Kuntz (former Turkey and Germany under-21 coach) have all been linked to the club as of late.

Sporting director Christian Keller stated that there is a profile that they are looking for in a coach: “We have a clear game idea that was implemented under Steffen. This game idea should not change. On the contrary, it is to be strengthened and stabilized. So we have to find a trainer who fits this idea. In addition, the coach must see the quality in the team that we all see – which the players must also dare again to stay in the league.”

One manager that has been ruled out is Friedheim Funkel as Köln prefers a coach that fits their aforementioned profile and is more of a long-term option compared to an option that will try and save them from relegation and then leave in the summer.

A decision is expected to be made before January 2nd when 1.FC Köln’s players return to training after their break. Köln’s first game back is on the 13th January at home against Heidenheim.
