Schalke 04 wish to extend Sepp van den Berg’s loan from Liverpool

As reported by WAZ, Schalke 04 wishes to extend the loan of Sepp van den Berg from Liverpool.

van den Berg has missed much of the season due to a severe ankle. However, the 21-year-old has returned just in time to help Schalke in their bid for survival. The Liverpool loanee was back in the starting eleven during S04’s 3-2 over Mainz 05 last weekend.

Those responsible at Schalke wish to see the youngster at the club once again next season. However, a permanent deal is off the table due to the club’s poor financial situation. S04 hope to negotiate another year’s loan and there’s reason to be hopeful.

“We know what we have in Sepp, and Sepp knows what he has in Schalke 04,” said the head of licensing, Gerald Asamoah. He continued: “Ultimately we have to see how the situation is after the season. We all hope to stay in. Then maybe there’s a chance to persuade Sepp to stay.”

van den Berg himself can imagine staying with the royal blues. The defender explained: “In the two games against Bremen and Mainz alone I gained great experience. But the Bundesliga is a great opportunity for me. If Schalke want to keep me, I’m definitely open to staying.”
