Sadio Mané returns after three month layoff

Sadio Mané (30) returned for Bayern Munich on Sunday after missing three months through injury. Speaking after their 3-0 win against Union Berlin, the Senegalese forward discussed his return.

“It’s important to take the whole thing step by step,” said Mané. “Today I played 30 minutes. Maybe I can play 45 minutes or an hour in the next game.” Out of action since November, Mané replaced Kingsley Coman after 65 minutes: “The feeling was just fantastic.”

Goals from Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Kingsley Coman and Jamal Musiala put Bayern Munich into a 3-0 lead against title rivals Union Berlin on Sunday. An excellent response after a defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern reclaim top spot and are level with Borussia Dortmund after 22 games.

Mané resumed team training last week after a tendon rupture on the head of the right fibula saw the 30-year-old miss the World Cup. Since his €32m move from Liverpool in the summer, Mané has scored six and created three in 15 Bundesliga games, and also has four goal contributions (three goals, one assist) in six Champions League games for Bayern this season.
