Speaking to Bild, RB Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schröder does not rule out a potential departure for Timo Werner in the January transfer window.
When asked about the striker’s form and future, Schröder said: “He is a part of the team that has to face the competition. There is a bit of the performance principle. And if others are currently a bit ahead, then Timo is also one who faces the whole thing and also accepts the matter” On a potential departure in January, Schröder added: “I wouldn’t say that now. We look at the squad normally and will certainly also have players there who may say on their own that they have something else in mind. We also face the matter.”
With Euro 2024 on the horizon, Werner has lost his place in the German national team due to his poor club form with Marvin Ducksch and Kevin Behrens being called up ahead of him in recent months. While at Leipzig, despite being given opportunities by Marco Rose, the 27-year-old has failed to capitalise on them and has found himself behind the inform Loïs Openda, Yussuf Poulsen and Benjamin Seško in the Leipzig pecking order.
It has previously been reported that a loan move could be an option for Werner as he has a contract at Leipzig until 2026 and due to his poor form, the 27-year-old is unlikely to attract offers close to the €20m that Leipzig paid when he joined from Chelsea close to 18 months ago.
