Manchester United set price tag for Bayern Munich target Raphaël Varane

It has been a whirlwind start to the season for Bayern Munich and Thomas Tuchel. After losing the DFL-Supercup to RB Leipzig, Der Rekordmeister have seen their place at the top of the Bundesliga table taken by Bayer Leverkusen.

As well as this, an exit from the DFB-Pokal at the hands of third-tier side Saarbrücken left a sour taste in the mouths of all connected to the club. However, at the root of Bayern’s issues is the lack of squad depth. Injuries have plagued the club, and this has left those in charge with no other option than to address the problem in January.

With multiple holes to fill in the winter, it is Tuchel’s backline that has been tested the most, with the latest injury to Matthijs de Ligt meaning that Bayern will have to face Köln on matchday twelve with just two fit centre-backs. Therefore, the record champions have identified Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane as a suitable option to help add bodies to Bayern’s rearguard.

As reported by Abendzeitung München, the Premier League side have set a price tag of €20m-€30m for the Frenchman. While the fee is certainly within Bayern’s budget for the winter, his annual wage of €17m could be an issue. Despite the desperate need for additional help, Der Rekordmeister may elect to look elsewhere to free up room financially for their ideal midfield target, João Palhinha.
